The suburbs of Quito reminded me very much of Caracas, very poor and shabby concrete houses stacked precariously up the mountains surrounding the city. Not quite as chaotically stacked as Caracas though! Quito is long and thin nestled in between mountains and it has two ´Centros´ - modern and historical - and a commercial district.
